In specialized schools, training begins when students are 14 or 15 years old. These young girls, known as "shikomi," go through a phase that usually ends in less than a year. They practice walking, standing, conversing, and taking on household chores. They also learn about discipline and how to wear kimono properly.

The next phase is known as "minarai." They still perform the same duties as before, but now attend banquets with maiko and geiko. By looking at them, the females acquire new skills.

The girls then advance to the position of “Maiko”. During this two to six year training period, they learn traditional Japanese skills in detail.
