Maiko applies color to the lower lip only; Geisha applies color to both the upper and lower lips. The lower lip is represented as a flower bud in both examples by drawing a curved stripe around it.

Because geishas are known for their meticulous hair care, their iconic hairstyles can take several hours to create. Geishas are allowed to wear wigs, but maiko must style their own hair.
