How To Tell If Your Dog Is Crying For Help

1. Your dog whines

If your dog whines while you're interacting with them, they may be trying to communicate with you. They could be demanding more food, treats, or attention. Alternatively, they could be frustrated that they can't reach their favorite toy. For example, if they're stuck under the couch, they may whine until you help them remove them from their hiding place. If your dog whines more often or for longer periods of time, they could be in pain. A good reason to take them to the vet for an evaluation is if you notice these warning signs.

2. Your dog is panting

Panting is a natural behavior in dogs to help them stay cool by evaporating water from their nose and lungs. Since dogs cannot sweat like humans do, panting serves as their way of cooling themselves from the inside out. If your dog is panting excessively, they could be overheated, dealing with a chronic health problem, or suffering from an imminent life-threatening injury. Take them to the vet immediately for further evaluation; blood tests and radiographs (x-rays) may be necessary to rule out any underlying problems and surgery might even be necessary to address problems like laryngeal paralysis, which makes breathing difficult for them.

3. Your dog licks his paws

If your dog frequently licks his paws, it could be an indication of an underlying health or behavioral issue. Wilson suggests that one of the most likely causes of your dog's behavior may be an injury to his paw. Look for redness, scabs, bleeding, blisters, discharge, or foreign objects such as foxtails on the paw. Another possibility is that your dog licks his paws to relieve pain. Conditions such as arthritis, cancer, and rheumatism can cause chronic discomfort in different parts of the body.

4. Your dog whines

Your puppy may be whining because they need something or feel an intense emotion that needs to be expressed. This may include food, water, a potty break, a toy, or attention. Whining may be caused by pain or anxiety in your dog. If they seem to be in distress, examine them carefully to find out what is causing their discomfort.
