The girlfriend wanted, understandably, the embarrassing gap between her and her lover eliminated from the picture.

That would be a mistake since she was photoshopped clutching a garbage bag. Not only that but the beach was furnished with garbage cans and signs to help it fit in better with the rest of the picture.
