The Spanish River Dog is a cuddly dog friend. It can occasionally be used as a hunting dog and is adept at retrieving objects from the sea. Others describe it as a happy, energetic, playful and work-oriented animal. These dogs are so wary of strangers that they will growl, snarl or even lunge at them despite their devoted owner telling them practically anything. The American Kennel Club believes that early socialization is essential for water dogs for a variety of reasons, some of which are listed below. However, it is important to stress that training must be done with love and patience if a positive outcome is desired.
