The American Kennel Club ranks the Saint Bernard as one of the most popular dog breeds worldwide. Native to the Swiss Alps, these huge dogs are known for their ability to perform snow rescues in sub-zero temperatures. Weighing 120 to 140 pounds for females and 140 to 180 pounds for males, these powerful and muscular dogs can act without being aware of their own strength. While this breed is usually smart and amiable, it can become aggressive if not properly socialized. What children find amusing can quickly turn to harm. For this reason, training is necessary for this and many other breeds.
17. Basenji
The Basenji breed is over 5,000 years old. Since then, they have needed continuous stimulation. These mammals are sometimes called "barkless dogs" because they cannot bark. Instead of talking, they yodel. This can be problematic because it is difficult to understand what the animal is trying to communicate. Although Basenjis only weigh 22-24 pounds, they have a lot of energy and a strong need to run. If an owner is unable to give their dog the time or space they need to exercise, or does not understand yodels, this sweet-faced dog may become angry and reactive.
