Avocados contain two very important carotenoids: lutein and zeaxanthin. Everyday activities create free radicals, so carotenoids act as antioxidants and remove them from your body. Lutein and zeaxanthin are both essential for eye health. Both carotenoids work well individually, but together they work even better. The macula, which is important for vision, is where these carotenoids exclusively accumulate. Studies have shown that there is a close link between macular degeneration and cataract formation.
